Problems & Opportunities

Over the past several months, the NGTA Project Team has been undertaking a rigorous consultation program with the Municipal Technical Advisory Group, Regulatory Agencies, Community Advisory Group, Business and Commercial Stakeholders and Transportation Service Providers. Consultation has focused on the process for identifying transportation problems and opportunities in the Niagara to GTA Corridor, as well as obtaining feedback on the elements of the existing transportation system that adversely affect them and to identify potential opportunities to improve or enhance the transportation system.

In parallel with this consultation effort, the Project Team has proceeded with the technical work, which includes transportation demand forecasting and modelling to identify transportation problems.

A summary of stakeholder consultation in identifying problems and opportunities has also been developed to identify the stakeholder groups consulted and summarize the input received:

Summary of Stakeholder Consultation - Problems and Opportunities

Public Information Centre #2

The identification of problems and opportunities is a critical stage of this study, and it is the goal of the Project Team to make certain that stakeholder comments are appropriately addressed. In particular, the Project Team is continuing to coordinate our work with the current Metrolinx efforts to prepare a Regional Transportation Plan for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). We are also consulting with municipalities on how the polices set out in the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe and municipal land use planning will be addressed in the Niagara to GTA demand forecasting and modelling exercise.

As a result of these efforts, the preparation of an Area Transportation System Problems and Opportunities Report and the second round of consultation (including public information centres) originally anticipated to be held in the Spring of 2008, is being scheduled for the Fall of 2008. The next round of consultation events will present the findings of the work undertaken on problems and opportunities as well as the approach for assessing transportation system alternatives. A notice advising of these events will be provided in advance.

Transportation Modelling and Demand Forecasting Information Session

At the request of stakeholder groups, a Transportation Modelling and Demand Forecasting Information Session was held for the Community Advisory Group on February 27, 2008, and the joint Municipal Technical Advisory Group / Regulatory Agency Advisory Group on March 4, 2008.

The Information Session consisted of a presentation on the overall transportation problems and opportunities process, modelling and forecasting principles, and the details of modelling and forecasting approaches to be used (Greater Golden Horseshoe Model and Strategic Demand Forecasting). Questions were responded to throughout and after the presentation.

A video of the presentation has been prepared. Audio commentary from the presenter at both meetings has been provided to guide you through the information presented.

For more details on the Information Session (i.e. agenda, minutes, meeting summary, and the presentation) please refer to the Community Advisory Group page.
